Laguna Chicabal, 20.3.11

Laguna Chicabal welcome signLaguna Chicabal, a spectacular volcanic crater is one of the main tourist attractions around Xela.  Surrounded by mystic cloud forest, the lagoon is considered sacred by Mayans. Various Mayan altars/crosses dot the shore.

From the lookout on the crater rim we were just able to see the volcanoes Santa Maria and its active smaller brother  Santiaguito before the clouds rolled in. Clear views are very rare as mists are usually blanketing the entire lake and volcanoes by mid-morning.
