Semana Santa, Livingston

Semana Santa in Livingston has turned out to be something special. As it is organized by the Garifuna community, African-Caribbean flair was part of the processions and the whole weekend. While the beach is dotted with make-shift bars and discos for the many holiday visitors from all over Guatemala, the town town streets were covered with the traditional alfombras, brilliantly coloured sawdust carpets for the processions.

The main event was the procession with Jesus being pushed and taunted through the streets and the following crucifixion. And all this in scorching heat!
