South of Laos, March 14

enjoying or fighting the noodles

Further down South, in Pakse, we hired motorbikes again to explore the Bolaven Plateau, famous for coffee and waterfalls. It’s another famed loop of a few days but comparing it to the Thakhek loop we were a bit disappointed. More often than not we drove along hot and busy roads and the landscape hasn’t got that much to offer. However, some of the waterfalls are pretty spectacular!

Being so far in the South of Laos, we crossed over to one of the 4000 Mekong islands to see what’s there. So, the first impression of Don Det was: drugs and alcohol, travellers roasting in the midday sun next to their rubbish, and a rather unfriendly island community catering to tourist needs. We stayed for over a week. Why? We found a little bungalow paradise away from the mess and enjoyed great company, fantastic sunrises and sunsets, and delicious German food.
